MIAŁO CIĘ NIE BYĆ

2023/ 90 min / color

17-year-old Ryfka unexpectedly steps into the world of a father she hardly ever sees. She doesn’t intend to hang around for long, but as usual he messes up her plans. Not only does he find out that she’s struggling with a difficult life problem; he decides to help her out against her will. A 40-year-old man might not know much about the dilemmas of an adolescent girl, but despite Ryfka’s initial reluctance, it becomes apparent that the two of them have a lot more in common than they think. To their surprise they become each other’s answer to a deep longing to be understood. Jakub Michalczuk’s second film is a touching story about life’s outsiders, across different ages and life experience. What they have in common, beyond their blood ties, is stubbornness and a desire to find their place in the world. “For me, it was from the beginning a story about relationships. About how hard it is for us to talk about fundamental issues with those closest to us,” says Michalczuk. He made an interesting casting decision, casting Sonia Szyc and her real-life father Borys to play the leading roles.
