AMERICAN INDIES
YEAR OF THE FOX
2023 / 97 min / color
Inspired by true events, Year of the Fox is set in the late 1990s in luxurious Aspen. It’s a world full of money, glitz, and the kind of wild parties that a typical American teenager could only dream of. But for the main character, 17-year-old Ivy (a moving performance by Sarah Jeffery), a serious flaw emerges in this seemingly idyllic picture. It’s related to the painful divorce of her adoptive parents. She feels abandoned, like she’s losing her footing. She’s trying to find herself – and this toxic, patriarchal environment, in which value is determined by money, power, and their associated privilege, is not helping. Seasoned American director Megan Griffiths, together with screenwriter Eliza Flug, tells the story of the dangerous interplay between privilege and a sense of being above the law. About how social standing can provide cover for predatory behavior that targets vulnerable people. It’s an archetypal contemporary story that perfectly illustrates how not all that glitters is gold.
