Mira Napieralska is a 60-year-old woman who works as a midwife. She’s great at her job and even better at hiding her own needs and feelings. Even in her private life her main focus is on others – her husband and her adult son. Once in a while, she sneaks out onto the rooftop of her block of flats to smoke a cigarette; these small, inconspicuous actions are the only thing Mira does for herself. When yet another day starts out with the usual routine, it’s difficult to imagine that Mira is about to do something no one would ever expect. What she does may lead to serious legal consequences, but it could also allow her to finally see her life from a different perspective. Anna Jadowska’s new film is a poignant study of loneliness and social insensitivity, where the only way to stop being invisible is to do something extreme. Woman on the Roof is a wonderful showcase for Dorota Pomykała. Her performance won her an Eagle Award, as well as recognition from New York’s Tribeca Film Festival and many others.
