Jesse Eisenberg, the unforgettable Mark Zuckerberg from David Fincher’s The Social Network (2010) and a guest at one of the first editions of Mastercard OFF CAMERA, makes his debut as a director/screenwriter with a bittersweet story about Gen Z and difficult family relationships. It dovetails well with his acting style: light comedy is juxtaposed with serious, engaged discussions, and notes of irony are balanced with a tender narrative about the need for understanding. Eisenberg brings in elite acting talent, casting Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard in the lead roles. The film’s narrative is centered around the protagonists’ family conflict: Evelyn, who works at a shelter for victims of domestic violence, can’t seem to understand her teenage son, much as she tries — from his passion for music to his typical teenage dilemmas. Her son, on the other hand, is completely absorbed with virtual reality and neglects everything else, from his family responsibilities to everyday real life and relationships with his friends. The conflict between these two completely different attitudes inevitably comes to a head.
