BLACK SHEEP

TO KALOKAIRI TIS KARMEN

2023 / 106 min / color

Demos and Nikitas are best friends who have been pursuing careers as actors for years. As gay men they have to deal with a lot of stereotypes in terms of how they are perceived in the film world and what roles they supposedly can play. Fed up with the state of things, Nikitas decides to write and direct his own movie, the kind of queer romantic comedy he has always dreamt of. Together with his BFF, he starts developing a story that takes place on a hot nudist beach in the middle of a steamy Greek summer. Viewers get to watch the witty and captivating adventures of the central characters, in which fiction and reality blur in unexpected ways. Zacharias Mavroeidis creates a smart and funny film-within-a-film, while playing with the conventions of so-called “gay film.” He isn’t interested in exploring marginalization or in following the norms of the straight world; instead he offers a joyful, queer summer escapade in which the boundaries between dreams and reality are blurred.
