BLACK SHEEP
LA PRÁCTICA
2023 / 95 min / color
The protagonist of Martin Rejtman’s latest film, which premiered at last year’s San Sebastian Film Festival, is Gustavo (a witty performance from Esteban Bigliardi), a Chilean yoga instructor who has been successfully teaching classes with his wife Vanessa (Manuela Oyarzún) for many years. They haven’t gotten along in quite some time and they decide to split up and cancel their trip to India; Vanessa keeps their apartment and Gustavo gets the studio. As if he didn’t have enough problems, Gustavo injures his knee and has to go through an arduous rehabilitation process, plus his neurotic and overbearing mother comes to town. Rejtman humorously depicts the turmoil of a middle-age crisis, and delights in mocking specific male fixations. At the same time, he’s got a lot of empathy and understanding for his lost-at-sea protagonist, who’s torn between two different worlds and cultural realities.
