A VIDA INVISÍVEL DE EURÍDICE GUSMÃO
Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz transports us to Rio de Janeiro in the early 1950s, where 18-year-old Eurídice and 20-year-old Guida are bound together by sisterly ties, to the point of feeling like they can’t live without each other. Although they’ve had to grow up in a conservative environment and a tyrannical family, they each have a clear life plan. Eurídice wants to become a famous pianist, while Guida dreams of finding a great, genuine love. As a result of dramatic events, the two women are separated and forced to live apart, unable to find out much about each other, but they never lose hope that they will eventually be reunited. Karim Aïnouz’s film has been called a “tropical melodrama” because he uses the poetics characteristic of the genre to tell the sisters’ dramatic story and spices it up with local color, symbolism, and music that stirs the senses. Aïnouz himself proclaimed in an interview that the film is a kind of tribute to all the exceptional women he has met on his life’s journey.
