A cinematic joyride? That’s probably the best way to describe the feature debut of a director with a familiar-sounding name — Stefan Kubicki. This crazy, bittersweet story centers on three couples and a single man who are about to embark on a weekend in the middle of nowhere — it’s a chance to have some fun and also to get to know each other better. As often happens, nothing goes according to plan: the relaxing time they had planned for turns into a hallucinatory nightmare involving drugs, mysteries, infidelity, and maybe even… aliens? The film plays with cinematic genres, eccentric ideas, witty dialogue and unpretentious acting. These hallmarks of low-budget production make Kubicki’s Safe Space a quintessential American indie.
