DO THE RIGHT THING
LES CHAMBRES ROUGES
2023 / 118 min / color
If you’re a fan of David Fincher’s Seven (1995) or the Mindhunter series (2017-19), Pascal Plante’s new film is just the thing for you. The Canadian director takes a look at the strange phenomenon of “groupies,” people fascinated by macabre crimes. A 20-something model, Kelly-Ann (a mesmerizing performance by Juliette Gariépy), is one of them. She becomes obsessed with a man accused of the brutal murder of three underage girls. When the high-profile trial begins, Kelly-Ann spends her days in the courtroom, hoping to make some fleeting contact with the object of her fascination. She becomes increasingly lost in all this, and her career and private life start to be affected. The line between fantasy and reality gradually begins to blur as well, especially when Kelly-Ann learns about the titular red rooms, places on the Dark Web where the murderer supposedly broadcast his crimes. Pascal Plante’s award-winning film combines elements of the horror and thriller genres, exploring the dark side of human nature. In Red Rooms, the Canadian director reflects on the problem of trivializing evil and its unfathomable power of attraction.
