As the all-important game approaches that will decide if her team wins the championship, 17-year-old Sofia (an electrifying performance from Ayomi Domenica Dias) discovers she’s pregnant. Shocked by this turn of events, she quickly decides to get an abortion, but it’s not so simple in a country where the procedure is illegal. Viewers get a sense of Sofia’s inner strength as her story unfolds; she becomes a target for a fundamentalist group, but her teammates and girlfriends support her no matter what. She won’t give up easily. Lillah Halla’s debut feature had its premiere at last year’s prestigious Cannes Critics’ Week. She deploys the conventions of coming of age movies and abortion dramas and passionately brings to life the social and gender-based injustices experienced by her protagonist. At the same time her film emphasizes the power and resilience of female solidarity.
