An one-man band – literally and figuratively. Actor, singer, director and producer, who gained experience in theater, orchestra and various movies, including independent cinema. Therefore, he could not be missing at this year’s edition of the Mastercard OFF CAMERA festival.
Wilson’s visit in Cracow included his presence at the Opening Gala and at a special screening of „Hard Candy”, during which he received the “Against the Current” award in recognition of his rich filmography and achievements. Most viewers may associate him with famous series such as “The Conjuring” or “Aquaman”, but the actor also appeared in theater plays, musicals, as well as in morally bold productions like “Angels in America” and “Little Children”, which have permanently entered the canon of contemporary pop culture. Let’s not forget that it was Patrick Wilson, together with several film friends, who founded Cinema Lab, the aim of which is to restore the former glory of cinemas affected by the pandemic. In connection with the award, we asked the actor about his opinion on independent cinema.
You mentioned that independent cinema means „finding your individual voice” – since you’re awarded with the „Against the Current” reward, do you feel that you found that voice?
That’s a tough question, because I think an actor’s job is to tell the story. I love film acting, but film is not an actor’s medium – the stage is. And I love making movies – that’s not a knock on it, but you can give your heart and soul to a film, and if the scene is not shot well or the scene is cut out of the movie – that’s it, you have no control. I think I’m finding my voice by directing and producing, so I think it’s coming into its own, but it’s difficult. When you’ve been on the other side of it and you see how performances can be made and shaped in the editing room, you realize very quickly that an actor’s way on a stage is more vibrant than it is in the film.
