PACARETTE

2019 / 97 min / color

Allan Deberton’s debut feature tells the story of an eccentric, elderly ballerina living in the small town of Russas in northeastern Brazil. For many years she found fulfillment on the stage, as well as through teaching, unveiling the secrets of dance to younger generations. After retiring, she decides to return to her hometown. Full of energy and ambition, she has no intention of settling into a quiet and peaceful old age. The night before a lavish celebration of the town’s bicentennial, she decides to prepare a surprise for the local community. She wants to present the people with a unique dance performance, as a gift, but no one seems to care much about her efforts. Pacarette is a story of passion, dedication and not giving up in the face of adversity, with a great performance by Marcela Cartaxo. Deberton’s film is one of the most award-winning Brazilian films in recent years.
