NEZOUH

2022 / 100 min / color

14-year-old Zeina lives with her parents in war-torn Damascus. When a bomb explodes right next to their house, a dilemma arises: what to do next? Zeina’s parents can’t come to an agreement. Zeina’s terrified mother is thinking of fleeing, but her father, in spite of the imminent danger, doesn’t want to leave their whole life behind. Even when a missile seriously damages their building it isn’t reason enough to leave… While the large holes in the wall and the roof are a constant inconvenience for the family, to Zeina they’re a window to the outside world, allowing her to spin innocent, childlike fantasies. Although Nezouh takes place against a military conflict, it’s a heartwarming story about freedom and dreams. Syrian director Soudade Kaadan focuses on the everyday existence of her characters, showing how even in such difficult circumstances there can be room for moments of joy. Nezouh is an allegorical tale of female emancipation and the search for hope in the midst of chaos.
