Jarek is a natural born Polish farmer, not afraid of hard work or confrontations with authorities. When a local MP betrays the interests of the locals, breaking a promise and changing his vote on an important issue, Jarek becomes a protest leader, organizing a picket outside the politician’s house. Little does he know that he will soon find himself in the midst of shadowy intrigue that will endanger his loved ones and put his dreams for the future in question. Grzegorz Dębowski’s debut feature is a gripping social drama set in modern-day rural Poland; he creates a realistic and intriguing portrait of a demographic that gets largely overlooked in Polish cinema. Dębowski also impresses by casting interesting and unusual faces, with Artur Paczesny in the lead role as one of them. All this contributed to Next to Nothing breaking out as the big surprise of the recent Gdynia festival, bringing a new Polish directorial talent into the spotlight.
