Tomek arrives in the big city with a brand-new degree in finance, ready to start his adult life with a bang. He dreams of becoming spectacularly successful, getting his ex-girlfriend back, and showing the world what he’s capable of. Low on money to begin with, he decides to rent a room in a crumbling old villa with a group of eccentric tenants. On his first night there, he realizes that he’s living in a place right out of a horror movie. It seems more likely to land him in a psych ward than the corporate job of his dreams. The exciting world of glass office buildings, love conquests, and la dolce vita is drifting away from Tomek, his young life plunged into chaos. Will he find the strength to break free from the jaws of madness? Although the title of Adrian Apanel’s debut feature suggests a horror movie, it’s more of a subversive dark comedy. The humor stems from the veritable side show that the tenants of the house represent, as well as from the director’s perspective on the reality of today — the job market and the many other problems faced by a generation just entering adulthood. The film is a creatively developed version of Apanel’s award-winning short film The Last Room on the Left (Stancja) from 2021.
