Holly (a phenomenal performance by Cathalina Geeraerts, in her screen debut) is a typical 15-year-old girl. One day she calls her school to let them know she’ll be staying home. Moments later, a fire breaks out in the building, leaving several students dead. The bereaved community tries to find solace by pulling together in the aftermath of the tragedy. A group of volunteers is headed by Anna, a teacher who’s clearly intrigued by the strange premonition that told Holly to stay home that day. Anna quickly notices that Holly’s presence brings unexpected relief and much-needed peace of mind to the people affected by the ordeal. But the community, benefiting from her extraordinary energy and influence on those around her, starts making more and more demands of the empathetic girl. Presented in competition at the recent Venice Film Festival, Fien Troch’s new film is a poignant study of collective trauma. The Belgian director continues to put her creative focus on the complex emotions of teenagers and the need for faith in times of crisis.
