There’s no question that we’re still stuck in a thoroughly patriarchal and chauvinistic society. While the last few years have brought on a lot of positive cultural change, spearheaded by the #metoo and #timesup movements, women still find themselves sidelined: at work, in the family, and ultimately on the big screen. This special themed section of Mastercard OFF CAMERA is not only about putting women at the center of the narrative, it’s also about showcasing productions created by uncompromising female directors that turn gender norms upside down — putting to bed, once and for all, widespread and inherently contemptuous concepts such as “the weaker sex.” These carefully selected films tell fascinating stories, powerfully transcending oppressive and unfair categories such as “women’s film.” Instead, they offer bold, subversive stories in which strong female protagonists don’t just occupy the space typically reserved for men, but show how new and different visions of the world and social order are possible. It unfolds before the viewers: all they need to do is listen to these unique herstories that shatter the patriarchal mold.
