EX-HUSBANDS
2023 / 99 min / color
The protagonist of this bittersweet comedy about divorce, running away, and complex male relationships is a New Yorker named Peter. He’s in the midst of a veritable avalanche of personal misfortunes: his wife decides to leave him after 35 years of marriage, and his parents, who have been married almost twice that long, also split up. Confounded by the whole situation, Peter only seems to find solace in his relationship with his two adult sons Nick and Mickey — but they’re busy preparing a bachelor party for Nick, who’s about to get married. Peter finds himself at the Mexican resort of Tulum, where the party is taking place, and things immediately start to go wrong; it becomes clear that he’s not the only male in the family with existential problems. Written for three male voices, Noah Pritzker’s film is charmingly unpretentious; it’s a fascinating perspective in the context of discussing male weaknesses.
