POLISH FEATURE FILM COMPETITION
DOPPELGÄNGER. SOBOWTÓR
2023 / 115 min / color
Jan Holoubek’s new film takes place on both sides of the Iron Curtain, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Hans (played by Jakub Gierszal) enjoys the opportunities available in the West, successfully blending into the local community in the bustling city of Strasbourg while he works as a spy. Meanwhile Jan Bitner (Tomasz Schuchardt, who won an award for this role) is a classic everyman, living with his family in Gdansk, where, like many others like him, he works at a shipyard. The two characters might not seem to have anything in common, but there’s a secret in their past that will force them to confront their weaknesses and passions, as well as question their identity. After the success of his debut feature, which depicted the dramatic fate of Tomasz Komenda, Jan Holoubek once again reaches into the past, this time a slightly more distant one. Doppelgänger. The Double is produced with great attention to detail, and by crafting this archetypal spy film Holoubek proves himself to be one of Poland’s leading specialists in genre cinema, though Doppelgänger. The Double. Jason Bourne than James Bond.
