LA HIJA DE TODAS LA RABIAS
2022 / 87 min / color
In her directorial debut, Nicaraguan director Laura Baumeister de Montis takes us to Managua, where exotic scenery is contrasted with the huge city dump that Lilibeth lives next to, with her 11-year-old daughter Maria. Their everyday lives come down to making ends meet and sheer survival. An opportunity arises for Lilibeth to earn extra money selling puppies, but ultimately the plan fails and she’s forced into a desperate search for any source of income. In the meantime Maria works alongside other children at the local recycling plant, recovering any valuable raw materials she can find in the trash, and makes friends with Tadeo. Baumeister de Montis’s poignant debut combines social commentary with a story about a young girl’s wild imagination, which brings a bit of light and beauty into the most extreme circumstances. An outstanding performance by young Ara Alejandra Medal, who becomes our guide through this brutal world of social inequality, deserves a special mention.
