NIEBEZPIECZNI DŻENTELMENI

2022/ 107 min / color

Tadeusz Boy-Żeleński, Stanisław Witkiewicz, Joseph Conrad and Bronisław Malinowski, four eminent personalities of Polish culture and the Zakopane bohemian scene, wake up after an all-night drunken party. Their heads are throbbing with hangovers, nobody remembers anything and it doesn’t help that there’s a mysterious dead body on the floor. On top of that, the police are pounding on the door… and that’s only the beginning of their troubles. A race against the clock ensues in which the protagonists have to absolve themselves of suspicion and the spread of dangerous rumors. They have to solve the case of the baffling death as quickly as possible. Thanks to these brilliant, thrill-seeking gentlemen, culturally vibrant Zakopane soon becomes the backdrop for a great web of intrigue involving gangsters, artists and politicians. The protagonists are confronted by none other than Vladimir Lenin, who has just arrived in Poronin… Maciej Kawalski’s film, with its all-star cast, is an alternative history lesson in the guise of a crime caper. In his feature film debut, Kawalski proves that it’s possible to respect your source material while also molding it to your own vision — and have a great time doing it.
