CHLEB I SÓL

2022 / 100 min / color

A hot summer, idleness, freestyle hip-hop, guys with tattoos, flirtatious girls you’d better not mess with. Tymek, a student from the Warsaw Academy of Music, returns to this place from his youth as he prepares to embark on an international career as a pianist. There’s also his mother and his brother Jacek, as well as his friends from the old days sitting together outside in the projects. But Tymek is only here for a short while – after his vacation he’s leaving for Western Europe, where he has received a scholarship. This short visit is enough for him to get acquainted with the neighborhood meeting point for young people — a new kebab bar. The guys from the projects generally have a good relationship with foreigners, with a few exceptions. Over time, a conflict escalates, spiraling into fear and danger, and Tymek finds himself at the center of it all… In his long-awaited debut feature, Damian Kocur continues to use the familiar creative process from his award-winning short films, based on working with non-professional actors. Bread and Salt, which won an award in Venice, is a painfully authentic portrait of small-town Poland, full of stereotyping, prejudice and violence.
