Malgorzata keeps every aspect of her life under control. She has her feet firmly on the ground, determined and well-organized. She has devoted everything to her professional career. Her younger sister Lucja is quite the opposite – spontaneous, always searching, sometimes lost, she finds fulfillment as a mother. Although their life paths have often run in different directions, they reconnect during the most important journey of their lives: Malgorzata is terminally ill and Lucja is taking her to a renowned clinic in Switzerland, but they each see the purpose of the trip differently. For Malgorzata, it’s going to be her final journey; she wants to leave on her own terms. Lucja, on the other hand, believes she can convince her sister to change her mind and fight for her life. They proceed to experience deep conversations, arguments, tears, and laughter. There’s uncertainty about whether they’ll be able to be as close to each other as they once were, whether they still have something to say to each other, and, finally, whether this meeting will also turn out to be a final goodbye. Slawomir Fabicki, returning to the big screen after a long break, uses a road movie blueprint to tell a story of complicated sisterly relationships, different faces of womanhood, and a topic rarely tackled by Polish filmmakers: euthanasia. Written in two voices, Anxiety finds its strength and poignancy in the acting performances of Magdalena Cielecka and Marta Nieradkiewicz.
