GIRL POWER!

ÀMA GLORIA

2023 / 83 min / color

Cléo is a determined, inquisitive six-year-old girl living with her father in Paris. Her beloved nanny Gloria, with whom she finds tenderness and understanding, is her guide to the city, as well as her guardian. The sudden death of Gloria’s mother, a native of Cape Verde, forces Gloria to make the difficult decision to return to her country of origin. The specter of separation takes its toll on Cléo and Gloria, who share a unique bond. To ease the pain, Gloria suggests to Cléo’s father that he let them spend one last summer together in her homeland. Cléo embarks on a journey in which she’s not only confronted with a new culture but also with a spectrum of emotions she’s never experienced before. Marie Amachoukeli’s independent directorial debut emerged as one of the major discoveries of the last Cannes Film Festival. The highlight of this tender, highly observant tale of love, family, strong bonds and separation is the outstanding film debut of the young Louise Mauroy-Panzani. Àma Gloria is a film that will melt even the coldest of hearts.
