Acclaimed Belgian director Joachim Lafosse centers the narrative of his new film on a well-to-do French family. François is a high-profile lawyer on the verge of resolving a high-profile court case that’s been dragging on for years. The case is such a big story that reporters wait outside his house day and night, just to get his latest comments. François’s wife Astrid and their adopted children have gotten used to being in the spotlight. Just when it seems that home is the only place of respite for the family, a serious fracture occurs. A family secret that was kept painstakingly quiet for many years suddenly comes to light, and it’s impossible to look away. After 25 years of silence, a painful struggle for justice begins. Lafosse’s harrowing film is inspired by true events that shook all of France. With its subdued directing and superb performances by Emmanuelle Devos and Daniel Auteuil, this tale of trauma, responsibility, and the consequences of misguided discretion lingers in the memory long after the screening.
