CHEMI OTAKHI

2022 / 107 min / color

Shy and reserved Tina (a great performance by Taki Mumladze, who co-wrote the script) flees from an abusive marriage in rural Georgia. She rents a room in the apartment of a highly social extrovert named Megi (an equally outstanding Mariam Khundadze), who needs extra cash to pay the bills. Tina expects her new boyfriend to join her, but things don’t go according to plan. She has to learn how to be independent, and she starts to enjoy living in the capital. To their own surprise, the two very different young women start to grow closer. The second feature from Ioseb “Soso” Bliadze is filled with on-point social and cultural observations, presented within a vivid panorama of the everyday life of Georgian millennials. Bliadze creates an intimate story about the highs and lows of two women growing up together, while sharply criticizing the patriarchal social norms that Tina and Megi have to face.
